Do Not Insinuate Unfairness In Islam.

Settlement is too low, mum of convert tells court

PENANG: A Hindu woman was offered too low a sum to settle her claim for insurance monies left by her army ranger son who died a Muslim, a High Court heard.

Counsel Darshan Singh Khaira told the court yesterday that the offer for settlement made by the defendants to his client, cleaner M. Rukumony, 61, could not be accepted as the amount was too low.

At this, Justice John Louis O’Hara adjourned the matter, which was being mentioned at the open court, to be heard in his chambers.

The case was later fixed for mention on March 14, for the parties to consider offers for settlement.

Rukumony had named the Koperasi Angkatan Tentera Malaysia Berhad and Amanah Raya Berhad as defendants. The court also subsequently allowed the Federal Territory Islamic Religious Council’s application to intervene as a defendant.

In her claim, Rukumony said the cooperative had taken out a policy on her son but refused to pay her the RM56,300 and instead deposited it with Amanah Raya.

The cooperative said that under Syariah Law, Rukumony could not inherit the property of her deceased son because she is a non-Muslim.

A friend asked for an opinion to the above article. He told me that as a Muslim he felt uncomfortable with the decision. I consulted an imam at my surau and informed me that according to Islamic 'faraid law' the mother is entitled to only one eighth of the total amount and the other portion will be distributed to the wife, the children and the next of kin.

At the same time my friend also consulted an ustaz and got different answer. The mother is not entitled at all, since according to Islamic law the property is to be distributed to Muslim next of kin only. That is under faraid law. However, the mother can receive a portion of the property according to ‘hibah law’ ( consolation ). Probably the mother received her portion through this mean. I would think she is entitled to negotiate for a higher amount, but it is not her right.

It is unfair to report that article without furnishing more information. At a glance it will give an impression lack of fairness in Islamic law, even the fellow Muslims are confused and sympathized with the mother.

Kebanyakan mendapat angpau berbulan bulan sebelum pilihanraya.

Lingam’s lawyer grilled

KUALA LUMPUR: A lawyer was put in a tight spot when commissioners grilled him over whether his client Datuk V.K. Lingam had admitted to being the person embroiled in the controversial video clip about the brokering of judges’ appointments.

R. Thayalan, representing Lingam before the Royal Commission of Inquiry on the video clip, was also queried if his client had said the things contained in the clip’s transcript.

When commissioner Datuk Mahadev Shankar asked if it was Lingam’s position that he was not the person in the video clip, Thayalan said:

“His position is that it does look like him and sound like him.”

Mahadev: But he’s not prepared to say that that is him?

Thayalan: This is what he told me. Let me take instructions from him on this.

‘Let me take instructions’ to mean ‘I was told to shut up’

Thursday is batik day

BY MAZWIN NIK ANIS and

PUTRAJAYA: Civil servants will now have to wear colourful batik attire every Thursday from tomorrow instead of having to wear them only twice a month.

Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Mohd Sidek Hassan said a circular on the sartorial code, signed by Public Services Department director-general Tan Sri Ismail Adam, was issued yesterday.

He said that apart from wanting to give Malaysian batik a boost by getting civil servants to wear it more often, the decision to have civil servants wear batik garments on Thursdays was “to make it easy for them to remember as to when they should put on their batik shirts”.

Thirty years ago we were instructed to put on batik every Saturday. Until now batik industry remains as it was. Now civil servants have to put on every Thursday. Never mine if it doesn’t work you have Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday to utilize.

Stop on outflow of foodstuff

By FARIK ZOLKEPLI

JOHOR BARU: Foreigners shopping in Malaysia will soon be prohibited from taking controlled food items, such as cooking oil, sugar and flour, out of the country in a bid to help prevent shortages.

Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Shafie Apdal said he would present the proposal at the Cabinet meeting today.

“The prices of these controlled items are already subsidised by the Government.

“Prohibiting them (foreigners) from taking these foodstuff out is one of the ways to avoid shortages,” he said after a briefing and dialogue with civil servants on the price increase of goods here yesterday.

The minister is getting smarter even though it should have been implemented long time ago.

Now I have the opportunity to make more money, ‘ jadi penyeludup’!!!

‘Unconventional partnership’ spells big bucks for duo

KUALA LUMPUR: In an industry dominated by Indians, a Malay woman and a Chinese man teamed up to get into the lucrative scrap metal business about five years ago, hoping for success.

Their hard work paid off when turnover quadrupled to RM20mil.

Yesterday, Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Dr Ng Yen Yen launched their new factory in Kampung Baru Balakong, near the capital.

Laila Shaikh Sulaiman Al Rafie, 50, and Benny Bek, 43, said they met through small business dealings more than 10 years ago.

Laila found Bek to be a sincere and honest businessman, so decided to team up with him and venture into the scrap metal business.

Correction!! she must be arabputra or parkiputra.

Continuity of leadership vital for development, says Najib

KUALA TERENGGANU: Continuity of leadership is essential to ensure that the nation enjoyed constant prosperity.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said Malaysia was successful in managing long-term plans for the benefit of the people because the leadership was maintained.

“Look at our closest neighbour, which could only implement short-term plans due to frequent changes in the leadership.

“In reality, Malaysia is a success story and has been a role model for developing nations,” he said when addressing 2,000 civil servants at Wisma Darul Iman here yesterday.

No reason to swallow what Najib said, he does’nt mean it. With God’s permission when he takes the lead from Badawi he’ll surely abandon what Badawi started.

Or for the given reason the present government will undertake long – term projects just to stay in power. Stupid excuse!!

MIC murder: Suspects not identified

By FARIK ZOLKEPLI

JOHOR BARU: Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan clarified that the suspect in the murder of Johor MIC deputy chief Datuk S. Krishnasamy has not been identified, contrary to Deputy Internal Security Minister Mohd Datuk Johari Baharom’s statement on Saturday.

“We only have the photofit of the suspect given by witnesses. No, we have not identified the suspect and the investigations are still going on,” he said Sunday after visiting Johor MIC headquarters here, where Krishnasamy was shot dead on Friday.

You smells something fishy and rotten here!!! IGP and Deputy Minister contradict each other. Probably it is MIC inside job, just like Soi Lek’s MCA opera.

Gombak school also segregates boys and girls

KUALA LUMPUR: It appears that SMK Seremban Jaya in Senawang is not the only co-ed school to have practised segregation.

The boys and girls at SMK Hillcrest in Gombak, apart from having to sit in separate rows in the classrooms, also sit on separate benches at the school canteen.

A check by The Star discovered that they were also required to use different staircases.

May be it’s not a bad concept. It’s one way to discipline youngsters. Nowadays they are too freely mixed they’ll even indulge in sex at that early age. In the 50's there were no coed schools, in spite of that we had no problem with our educations. Only problem was we had no boyfriend or girlfriend at that tender age.

Big-hearted tycoon Syed Mokhtar honoured

PUTRAJAYA: His parents taught him to provide for the poor and destitute – and those are the values that have shaped billionaire Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar Albukhary's life philosophy until today.

Thanking his parents for instilling in him such values, Syed Mokhtar heeded Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's suggestion that he donate the cash award of RM80,000 to his mother Sharifah Rokiah Syed Mohamed Rahmat.

The philanthropist was also awarded a certificate, medal and plaque.

From 1996 to 2006, his foundation has contributed almost RM1bil to charity.

Meanwhile, Malaysia's first man in space, Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor Sheikh Mustapha, was yesterday bestowed Negri Sembilan's Tokoh Maal Hijrah award.

The bachelor received his award from the Yang di-Pertuan Besar Tuanku Ja'afar Tuanku Abdul Rahman during the state-level celebration at the Seremban Municipal Council Hall.

“It is a privilege to be awarded the Tokoh Maal Hijrah title. I would like to express my gratitude to the state government for this honour,” he said.

I do not anticipate how you would react to the article above, but me, I feel very uneasy, somehow something is not quite right. Firstly for the billionaire to donate his 80K winner to his mother is not sensational. Secondly, for Dr.Sheikh Muszaphar to be tokoh Maal Hijrah is a fat joke.

I had the notion those people are running out of individuals to be awarded the Maal Hijrah. Islam Hadhari understanding the concept of Maal Hijrah really baffled me.

Hijrah Ke 1429

Hari Khamis 10/01/08 umat Islam akan melangkah ke tahun baru dengan sambutan yang sederhana tanpa pesta 'fireworks' atau bilangan detik ke 12:00 tengah malam. Kebanyakan anak muda yang beragama Islam tidak mengetahui tahun keberapa mengikut kalendar Islam. Bagaimana pun dengan peredaran masa ini bermakna perkara perkara berikut wajib dilalui;

a) umur sudah meningkat,
b) tubuh badan semakin lemah,
c) detik kematian semakin dekat.

Selamat berhijrah ke 1429.

Even Soi Lek Subscribe to Islam Hadhari.

Chua subsequently told a media conference that he was quitting all government and party positions so that he will cease to be a burden to government and party, especially in the context of Islam Hadhari and the “healthy political culture” proposed by the MCA President.

Perhaps Islam Hadhari say you can commit anything but don’t get caught.
